LÉON MONET, THE ARTIST'S BROTHER AND COLLECTOR

The Musée du Luxembourg presents a new exhibition dedicated to Léon Monet (1836-1917), the forgotten brother of Claude (1840-1926).

A color chemist, industrialist from Rouen and collector, Léon Monet played a decisive role in the artist's career. In 1872, when Monet returned to Le Havre to paint "Impression, soleil levant", Léon founded the Société industrielle de Rouen and decided to lend active support to his brother and his Impressionist friends.

These were the beginnings of a remarkable collection of modern art.

The exhibition brings together some one hundred works, including paintings and drawings by Monet, Sisley, Pissarro and Renoir, as well as color books, fabric samples, Japanese prints, archival documents and family photographs. Claude Monet's energetic portrait of his older brother in 1874, a vibrant testimony to the deep affection that united the two brothers, is presented here for the very first time. The exhibition places Léon Monet firmly in Claude's biography, and demonstrates the brothers' shared interest in color.
