Berthe Morisot and the 18th century exhibition

Guided tour

While Impressionist Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was always a painter of modern life, during her lifetime her art was often compared to the work of 18th-century French artists.eighteenth-century artists, prompting Renoir to call her "the last elegant and 'feminine' artist we've had since Fragonard".

Looking back on her posthumous retrospective in 1896, Paul Girard commented, "C'est le XVIIIe siècle modernisé".

The aim of the exhibition is to explore the origins of this inspiration, and to show, with the help of 18th-century works and a comparison with Girard's own works, the emblematic works of the period.works emblematic of Impressionism, the manifestations and form of his impregnation and understanding of the genius of the Age of Enlightenment.
