Expo La Régence

Paris, 1715-1723, a bustling capital city

The Regency began on September 2, 1715, on the death of Louis XIV: the late king's nephew, Philippe d'Orléans, had his will overturned and was granted the Regency.

At the age of 5, the young Louis XV left Versailles for Paris, where he remained until 1722. The Regent took up residence in the Palais Royal.

The Regency was therefore the return of the king to Paris: the government, administrations and most of the court moved back to the capital.

It was a period of great refinement and elegance in fashion and furniture, reflecting the art of living during the Age of Enlightenment.

Whoever has not lived under the Ancien Régime does not know what it is to live'' (Baron de Ségur).

An exhibition on the Regency period is a must at the Musée Carnavalet - Histoire de Paris, so much so that it is embodied in its Parisian setting. What's more, the subject has never been the subject of an exhibition before: it's unprecedented.

Museum admission will be charged extra (currently €11).
