Golden Gallery of the Banque de France

The Galerie dorée is housed in the Hôtel de Toulouse, the headquarters of the Banque de France. Its gilding, paintings, wood panelling and impressive 17th-century fresco make this gallery one of the most sumptuous in France, and the emblematic room of the Hôtel de Toulouse.

The gallery, located in theHôtel de Toulouse, is 40 m long, 6.5 m wide and 8 m high (the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles is 80 m long and 10 m wide). It was built between 1635 and 1640 by François Mansart for Louis XIII's Secretary of State, Louis Phélypeaux de la Vrillière. It was then completely redecorated between 1714 and 1719 by architect Robert de Cotte and sculptor Louis-Antoine Vassé, after the Comte de Toulouse bought the mansion.
