Giovanni BELLINI

Cross-influences

Born into a family of Venetian artists, Giovanni BELLINI, along with his brother Gentile, frequented the studio of their father Jacopo, a Gothic painter who was soon acquainted with the Renaissance innovations coming out of Florence.

He also worked with the great German burinist and painter Dürer, and with his brother-in-law Mantegna from Padua, the master of perspective and sculptural forms.

From this interplay of influences, he drew dramatic intensity, a vibrant touch and the colors of Venice.

His best pupils, Giongione and Titian, also influenced his later works.

It was in this unparalleled artistic effervescence that he worked and died.

Works by the Master and those close to him come from Venice, Berlin, Rome, Milan, Madrid and private collections.
