Women in art at the Musée du Luxembourg

Women Painters, 1780-1830. Birth of a struggle, at the Musée du Luxembourg, with superb canvases by Vigée Le Brun, Labille Guiard, Marguerite Gérard... And some of the male painters who portrayed them: Ingres, Gros, David, Boilly, Greuze...

Is charm a fighting tool?

After the glory of Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun during the Ancien Régime, it's not until the second half of the 19th century that we find such remarkable female painters. Yet it was between 1780 and 1830 that the struggle for women painters took root: the right to training, professionalization, a public existence and a place on the art market.
The women artists featured in this exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg were as much players in these social changes as they were in the mutations of 19th-century art.
