Conference: The future of civil aviation, what uses for our societies? Saturday, October 9

Lecture at Open House 2021, organized by the Toulouse chapter

Following the conferences organized by the Toulouse chapter:

  • at the JPO on October 12, 2019: "Environnement: quels défis, quels enjeux?
  • at the JPO on October 10, 2020: "The air transport of tomorrow: An industry without negative climate impact?", a conference dealing with the scientific and technological aspects of the subject
  • the hydrogen-powered flying wing conference cycle, which began on March 22,

a new conference will be organized during the JPO 2021 on the theme "The future of civil aviation: what uses for our societies", on Saturday October 9, from 4pm to 7pm.

Indeed, at the 2020 conference, discussions with the audience highlighted, beyond the need for scientific and technological innovation, a sociological and philosophical component to the issue: "aviation transports the rich for futile reasons, which humanity can, indeed must, do without..." "" aviation is a vector for damaging distant tourism"".
"Let's make sure that reality does not become opaque to the light of thought" Hannah Arendt, preface to The Crisis of Culture.

How to restore a positive perception of a means of opening up territories on a medical, economic and cultural level, and supporting essential interpersonal relations.

==> New conference to address these sociological and philosophical components/4 presentations by 4 expert speakers, followed by a round-table discussion:

Guest speakers :

  1. Introducing the expert speakers' analysis: Presentation of the results of a rigorous scientific and academic analysis of the situation by Nicolas Gourdain (Professor and Lecturer in Fluid Mechanics at ISAE-SUPAERO).

  2. The impact of air transport on the development of tourism and its social, economic and environmental consequences, including the global component. Véronique Mondou (lecturer in geography/tourism UFR ESTHUA Tourisme et Culture /Université d'Angers),

  3. L'aviation facteur de développement des territoires ; L'aéroport fait la ville, transport aérien et métropolisation, l'intermodalité des réseaux de transport . Pierre Ageron (Doctor of Geography, University of Strasbourg, member of the Laboratoire Image, Ville et Environnement (Live) UMR7362).

  4. Denis Faïck (Lecturer in philosophy at ISAE-SUPAERO) :
  • Anthropologically speaking, travel is part of who we are, guided by the quest for knowledge: Air travel and the Internet are two vectors of knowledge, but travel also brings with it encounters with others (culture, interpersonal relations) vs. the Internet, which is a vector of knowledge but lacks encounters with others, the sharing of emotions via the senses, and therefore the experience component. According to the temporality axis, the airplane brings speed, which opens up extensive possibilities for sharing experiences once you've arrived at your destination.
  • Analyze the consequences and don't confuse the cause of the problem: air transport as a vector for the spread of the pandemic? The real problem is the origin of the virus, and this calls for us to take advantage of this alert to rethink the global medical care system.
  • After this major crisis, let's be careful not to become inward-looking through fear of the other and the development of nationalism, forgetting the preamble to the Chicago Convention: "Considering that the future development of international civil aviation can greatly assist in creating and preserving friendship and understanding among the nations and peoples of the world,..".

    Round table:

moderated by Karine Deroche, (France Télévisions journalist), participants:The four expert speakers, Victor Carré--Poussin (I2023) President of SUPAERO for Earth, Eric Dalbiès (S1992) Director of Research, Technology and Innovation, SAFRAN Group), Olivier Del Bucchia (S2001) founder of Aéro-Décarbo, Laurent Joly (D 1994) Deputy Director of Research and Educational Resources at ISAE-SUPAERO, Bruno Stoufflet CTO Dassault Aviation, Michel Wachenheim President of Académie de l'air et de l'Espace.
